Thyroid problems linked to irregular heart rhythm

ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? People with an overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism) carry a greater risk of developing irregular heart rhythm (known as atrial fibrillation) than those with normal thyroid function, finds a study published on bmj.com today.

As such, the researchers suggest there should be an increased focus on atrial fibrillation in patients with raised thyroid function.

Hyperthyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland makes too much thyroxine (thyroid hormone), causing many of the body's functions to speed up. About 1 in 100 women and 1 in 1,000 men develop hyperthyroidism at some stage of their life and it can happen at any age.

It is well known that overt hyperthyroidism is associated with atrial fibrillation, but it's still not clear whether milder (subclinical) hyperthyroidism has a similar effect. Data on the risk of atrial fibrillation in patients with an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) is also limited.

So a team of researchers in Denmark set out to examine the risk of atrial fibrillation in relation to the whole spectrum of thyroid disease in a large group of patients.

Using nationwide registries, they identified 586,460 patients who had consulted a general practitioner in Copenhagen from 2000 to 2010 and had a thyroid function blood test. This measures the amount of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) circulating in the blood. In people with hyperthyroidism the level of TSH will usually be low, whereas in people with hypothyroidism the level of TSH will usually be high.

During an average five and a half years follow-up, 17,154 (3%) of patients had a diagnosis of a first atrial fibrillation, 53% of whom were women.

Compared to patients with normal thyroid function, the risk of atrial fibrillation increased with decreasing levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone. For example, patients with subclinical hyperthyroidism had a 30% increased risk of atrial fibrillation, while patients with high-normal thyroid function had a 12% increased risk.

In contrast, hypothyroidism was associated with a lower risk of atrial fibrillation.

The authors stress that, although atrial fibrillation was closely associated with thyroid activity, they cannot prove a direct cause-and-effect relationship. However, they say their study is "the first to assess the association between the whole spectrum of thyroid disease and the subsequent risk of atrial fibrillation in a population of primary care patients."

They conclude: "These results support long term screening for atrial fibrillation in patients with thyroid disease."

Andrew W.K. Nixed By State Dept. as Cultural Ambassador

Singer, rocker, free-form motivational speaker, and general party dude Andrew W.K. caused a stir in the music world by claiming the U.S. State Department had made him a cultural ambassador to the Middle East.

Unfortunately for rockers and partiers worldwide, it won't be happening.

W.K., whose given name is Andrew Wilkes-Krier, posted to his website announcing the State Department had invited him to travel to Bahrain in December to "promot[e] partying and world peace":

The US Department of State in partnership with the US Embassy in Manama, Bahrain, has invited Andrew to visit the Middle East to promote partying and positive power. In the tradition of the American Jazz Ambassadors who traveled the world in the mid 20th century as examples of American culture and spirit, Andrew has been invited by the State Department to travel to the Middle Eastern country of Bahrain and share his music and partying with the people there. Andrew will begin his journey sometime in December, 2012 and will visit elementary schools, the University of Bahrain, music venues, and more, all while promoting partying and world peace.

Andrew says: "This is a tremendous invitation. I'm very thankful to the Department of State for giving me the opportunity to visit a place I've never been before. And I feel very privileged and humbled by the chance to represent the United States of America and show the good people of Bahrain the power of positive partying. I can hardly wait for this adventure!"

But a State Department spokeswoman on Monday called the plans a "mistake."

"We had a Bahraini entity that approached the embassy about co-sponsoring a visit by this guy, who I take it is pretty popular there in Bahrain. That was initially approved, and then when more senior management at the embassy took a look at this, the conclusion was that this was not an appropriate use of U.S. government funds," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told reporters at a briefing.

"I think the conclusion was when they looked at the body of his work that we didn't need to be part of this invitation," Nuland said. "There may have been some preliminary conversations with him. But he is not going to be going to Bahrain on the U.S. government's dime."

Andrew W.K. made a name for himself with the 2001 album "I Get Wet," which featured metal-inspired pop-rock songs almost exclusively about partying. W.K. later hosted a show on MTV2 in which he received letters from troubled fans and attempted to help with their problems. He currently hosts the Cartoon Network show "Destroy Build Destroy."

W.K. has made a career of promoting the idea of partying, explaining it as a life ethos in free-form motivational speeches, where he stresses positive thinking and self-empowerment through partying and rock music.

The singer isn't taking the State Department rebuke so well.

He posted an update to his website on Monday, including a promotional flyer for his Bahrain appearance bearing red, block letters reading "CANCELED BY THE U.S. STATE DEPARTMENT." Read Andrew W.K.'s update:

BREAKING NEWS: After a year of planning and development, the US State Department has unexpectedly canceled their plans for Andrew's trip to the Middle East this week, after changing their minds and deciding that it was "a mistake and not appropriate." More information and a statement from Andrew, coming soon.

The singer also tweeted: "They can cancel our party in the Middle East, but they can never cancel the party in our hearts. #StayPositiveStayParty."

Gunmen free inmates at Nigeria police station

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) ? Police in Nigeria say gunmen attacked a major police station near the country's capital that is holding members of a radical Islamist sect, freeing some prisoners.

A statement confirmed an attack happened early Monday morning at the Special Anti-Robbery Squad station near Abuja. Federal police spokesman Frank Mba said the gunmen's assault allowed some 30 prisoners to escape. Mba said 25 had already been recaptured.

That station is holding suspected members of the radical Islamist sect known as Boko Haram. Mba denied any Boko Haram members escaped in the attack, though security officials routinely downplay such attacks.

Boko Haram is blamed for killing more than 760 people this year alone. The attack Monday comes after suicide bombings at a church at a military base Sunday killed at least 11.

(AP) ? Heath Bell became the latest player jettisoned by the Miami Marlins when he was dealt Saturday to the Arizona Diamondbacks, who also acquired infielder Cliff Pennington from the Oakland Athletics for outfielder Chris Young.

Arizona obtained Pennington and minor league infielder Yordy Cabrera from Oakland for Young and cash, then sent Cabrera to Miami for Bell. The Marlins will pay $8 million of the remaining $21 million Bell is owed.

Earlier in the day, Arizona exercised a $6.5 million option on closer J.J. Putz.

The 35-year-old Bell has 151 saves the past four seasons. He signed a $27 million, three-year contract with Miami last offseason but lost his closer's job in July. He finished with 19 saves in 27 chances and a 5.09 ERA in 73 games.

After failing to contend in the first season of their new ballpark, the Marlins traded former NL batting champion Hanley Ramirez to the Los Angeles Dodgers in July and sent pitcher Anibal Sanchez and infielder Omar Infante to the Detroit Tigers.

Arizona general manager Kevin Towers said Bell provides a right-handed power arm to help set up Putz, and Pennington adds experience at shortstop and second base.

Towers, who was the general manager in San Diego when Bell was the setup man for Trevor Hoffman, believes the pitcher will benefit from a return to the NL West.

"I think he's excited to kind of be able to clean the slate," Towers said.

Bell's contract calls for a $9 million salary in each of the next two seasons and includes a $9 million club option for 2015. Miami will pay $1.5 million next year, $3.5 million in 2014 and the $3 million deferred signing bonus he is owed.

Young, Arizona's center fielder for six seasons, was the odd man out in a crowded outfield with the team expecting young Adam Eaton, called up from Triple-A Reno late this season, to play center and be the Diamondbacks' leadoff hitter. But Towers said the job isn't automatically Eaton's. Gerardo Parra and A.J. Pollock also will compete for the spot.

Young will be reunited with Bob Melvin, who was his manager in Arizona.

"It caught me off guard a little bit, I'm not going to lie," Young said. "It's all settled in a couple hours now. I got an opportunity to talk to Billy (Beane) and got to talk to (Melvin). I'm excited to help. It's a new opportunity, a fresh start for me personally."

The 28-year-old Pennington played in 125 games for the AL West champion A's this season. He had 93 appearances at shortstop but was shifted to second base in August. A switch-hitter, Pennington hit .215 this year ? including .168 against left-handers ? and had 28 RBIs.

"He had a down year. That happens. Guys have down years," Towers said. "Heath had a down year. That's why we were able to make these deals."

Towers said he believes Pennington can be an everyday shortstop, plus fill in behind Aaron Hill at second base. The team also has Willie Bloomquist and John McDonald at shortstop.

Towers said Bell might have been uncomfortable with his high-profile signing during the Miami makeover last winter.

"Maybe a lot of it had to do with the pressure, his first big contract," Towers said, adding that Bell "was really the first big signing" the Marlins had in the offseason.

The Arizona general manager thinks his bullpen ? led by Putz, David Hernandez, Brad Ziegler and now Bell ? "is as good a bullpen as there is if not in the National League but in baseball."

With considerable money invested in the bullpen, Towers said it's particularly important to have a strong group of relievers while Arizona's young starting rotation develops. He said Arizona still needs a late-inning left-handed reliever and perhaps a veteran starter.

This could be a sign Beane, the A's general manager, might try to move center fielder Coco Crisp, who signed a $14 million, two-year contract in January that includes a $7.5 million club option for 2014 with a $1 million buyout. Beane, however, said he plans to keep Crisp, though he realized there would be speculation otherwise.

"I really like our outfield," Beane said. "Everybody knows how important this guy is to this team and also has the benefit of being a personal favorite of mine."

Oakland already acquired shortstop Stephen Drew from the Diamondbacks this season and he helped the Athletics down the stretch. The A's overtook Texas on the final day of the regular season to win the division and returned to the playoffs for the first time since 2006. They lost in five games to the World Series-bound Detroit Tigers.

Beane said the day after the season ended he planned to keep his young team intact as much as possible. Last offseason, Oakland traded three top pitchers: Trevor Cahill to Arizona, Gio Gonzalez to Washington and closer Andrew Bailey to Boston.

The 29-year-old Young, a popular player in the Arizona clubhouse, has had three 20-homer, 20-steal seasons. He injured his right shoulder crashing into a wall while making a catch early this season and struggled at the plate afterward. A quadriceps injury in early September sent Young to the bench in favor of Eaton.

'March on Wall Street South' draws hundreds

Chuck Burton / AP

Demonstrators gather at Frazier Park at the start of a protest march Sunday in Charlotte, N.C.

By NBC News staff

Updated at 3:18 p.m. ET: About 800 people chanting and carrying signs (among them, "Banks got bailed out. We got sold out") marched Sunday through the central business district in Charlotte, N.C., ahead of the Democratic National Convention to protest what they said was seedy corporate influence on politics.

The protesters, who came from across the country, gathered at Frazier Park for a round of speeches before starting the march. They?were from a coalition of more than 80 local and national groups.?Media packets declared the group's mission as "building peoples' power during the DNC.

Demonstrators had signs indicating that some were union workers, anti-war veterans and undocumented immigrants.?

"Capitalism is holding back the human race," one sign read. "Bail out people, not banks," another sign said.

Hundreds of chanting protesters march through uptown Charlotte, N.C., ahead of the Democratic National Convention. WCNC reports.

The protest route was to take them past the corporate headquarters of Bank of America and a major office hub for Wells Fargo ? financial institutions that some see as symbols of foreclosures and federal bailouts. Protesters also planned a stop at the headquarters of Duke Energy, the nation?s largest utility.

Duke has been criticized for investing in nuclear energy and using coal, according to the Charlotte Observer. Protesters have asked the company to focus on wind and solar power, which emit less carbon into the atmosphere. Duke, in defense, says it aims to retire its older coal plants.

Uniformed police officers on bicycles and on foot kept a close eye on the marchers. Ray Suarez, of PBS NewsHour, tweeted, "Just watched Occupy et. al. march through Charlotte, who were in turn watched by enough cops to invade a small country."

Before the main event began, a small press conference was held highlighting a woman, Sylvia Sanchez, who says she must pay $20,000 to Bank of America by Sept. 14 to avoid foreclosure on a home she's owned for 12 years.?The woman, whose daughter is suffering from a brain condition called hydrocephalus, said she is in debt after having retrofitted the home with wheelchair ramps.

In interviews with NBC News, rank-and file-activists cited different reasons for coming.

Kendall Hale, a massage therapist and Obama campaign volunteer from Asheville, N.C., said that climate change was among her concerns.

"The era of compromise may not be working so well," Hale said. She urged President Obama to "forge ahead with the issues [he's] speaking about so eloquently."

Andie Marion, a college student also from the Asheville area, said her chief concern was "money in politics."

"The amount of corporate power that influences a lot of the politics I think is really huge," she said.

On the sidelines, Sunday's protest in Charlotte triggered a conversation about where the Occupy movement is headed.?

Todd Gitlin, who wrote Letters to a Young Activist and Occupy Nation: The Roots, the Spirit, and the promise of Occupy Wall Street, told NPR: "The initial wave moved its metaphors into the household conversation and shaped politics. But I think they essentially reached the limits of what they could achieve. Now there's a sorting process."

The Democratic National Convention opens Tuesday in Charlotte's Time Warner Cable Arena. President Barack Obama will be nominated for a new term on Wednesday. He will deliver his acceptance speech Thursday night at the outdoor Bank of America Stadium.

The convention starts less than a week after Republicans gathered in Tampa, Fla., to nominate Mitt Romney as the party's presidential candidate.

Scientists probe mystery of operon evolution

Saturday, September 1, 2012

The threads of an evolutionary mystery that dates to the birth of molecular biology are beginning to unravel, thanks to a new investigation by computational bioengineers at Rice University and the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.

In new research published online this week in PLOS Computational Biology, Rice's Oleg Igoshin and MD Anderson's Christian Ray offer a possible explanation for the existence of jointly controlled clusters of genes called operons, which are found in bacterial chromosomes but not in those of higher order organisms like humans.

The new study harkens to one of the earliest 20th-century discoveries in molecular biology, and it could help clear 21st-century hurdles for synthetic biologists.

In the early 1960s, just as scientists were discovering how cells transcribed information from DNA to create the necessary proteins for life, French scientists Jacques Monod and Fran?ois Jacob found that the bacterium Escherichia coli used three specialized genes to create the proteins it needed to break down and digest lactose. They also found that these three metabolic genes were switched on and off together from a single control point.

Monod and Jacob had discovered the first operon, a set of multiple genes that are controlled as one. It marked the first time that scientists had identified a gene regulatory network, and it earned them a share of the 1965 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Monod and Jacob's lac operon turned out to be the first of many bacterial operons. But by the late 1960s, it was clear that operons weren't the biological norm. None have ever been found in humans, for instance, and very few have been identified in multicellular organisms.

"There's never been a definitive explanation for why nature would preferentially select for operons in prokaryotes but not in eukaryotes," said Igoshin, associate professor of bioengineering at Rice. "In addition, we do not know how genes get grouped into operons. Why, for example, are some interacting genes selected to be in one operon while others are not?"

Igoshin and Ray are computational bioengineers who apply mathematics and computational bioinformatics to study cell signaling and other biochemical processes. Ray, a former Rice postdoctoral research associate in Igoshin's research group, is now in the Department of Systems Biology at MD Anderson. Ray and Igoshin began investigating operons in late 2009 to determine whether their evolution might have been influenced by the "noisy" nature of biochemical signals that regulate bacterial gene transcription.

"When a cell is responding to its environment, it can use regulators to control gene expression, but the amount of control that the cell has is limited by the number of molecules like messenger RNAs, which mediate protein production," Ray said. "So, in bacteria, the number of copies of a protein expressed by a gene can vary widely, say from 50 one hour to 100 the next. And this happens even when conditions outside the cell have not changed."

Igoshin and Ray knew that these random fluctuations were less of an issue for eukaryotic cells, which have larger volumes and more copies of messenger RNA and proteins. So they hypothesized that operons play a role in helping bacteria deal with these "noisy" conditions.

To test their idea, they developed a series of mathematical models of gene networks that could be run on a computer rather than on cell cultures, as well as statistical tests that could be performed using the information accumulated in bioinformatic databases.

Their mathematical models of gene networks covered six different types of protein-protein interactions. For each interaction type, they compared how operons affected noise in networks encoded by the member genes. For three of the six networks, operons worked to suppress noise. For the other three, they worked to increase noise. The findings from the simulations therefore suggested that operons could reduce the detrimental effects of noisy signals in some gene regulatory networks, but not others.

To further test the idea, Igoshin and Ray examined the operon organization of the E. coli genome. They found operons were frequent when the type of interaction that they encoded worked to suppress noise. When the encoded interaction did not suppress noise, operons were infrequent.

"Operons that emerged in the course of evolution in E. coli are consistent with selection for noise suppression and selection against noise amplification," Igoshin said.

The study also suggested why specific genes might be found in a specific operon.

"Certain genes perform much better when they're controlled as a unit, particularly if they produce co-ingredients that are required in proportional amounts," Ray said. "In the simulations, when these were split up and put onto separate operons, the inherent noise in the control signals would create a situation where the cell had way too much or too little of one co-product. In some cases, this is just inefficient, but in others the buildups could be toxic."

Ray and Igoshin said the study has implications for synthetic biologists who are trying to imbue cells with new biological functions not found in nature.

"For example, if you need to take multiple enzymes from different species and put them into a bacterium -- something that was done recently to produce a low-cost anti-malaria drug -- it might be easier to take them separately and put them into different parts of the chromosome," Igoshin said. "What this new finding shows is that there may be a cost for that in terms of overall fitness of the organism. Nature sometimes groups things together, particularly in cases where one of the enzymes makes or consumes toxic intermediates, and synthetic biologists would do well to pay attention to these types of interactions as they prepare their designs."

Unregistered Moving Company Hiring unregistered moving company is a common mistake. Many people plan their move with unregistered shifting agencies to save some amount of money but it must be avoided. You should always prefer registered and reputed shifting agencies for relocation because your goods are important and their safe transportation is the prime issue.

Cheap Moving Services There are many moving agencies offer you services at very low rates in comparison to average market rates but you should avoid them. Most of the cheap rate agencies are not up to the standard. They are not able to provide you good quality and safe relocation services. So, before hiring any moving company you should take detail information about the company's experience, service standards, expertise area and policies. Don?t take detail information over phone call. Personally visit the nearest branch of the company and meet from their representatives and staff members. Also take information about goods transporters and resources of the company.

Hiring Moving Company without Home Inspection Most of the expert packing and transportation service providers perform complete home inspection at least once before committing for their services. If any moving company is not interested in your home inspection, most probably the agency is not able to serve you effectively. You should avoid such kinds of service providers.

Uninsured Moving Company Planning shipping of goods with an uninsured moving is the most traumatic decision in any relocation. Transportation of goods to a new place involves lots of uncertainty and you should always plan your move with moving company that offer complete insurance coverage for the entire moving stuffs.

These are the seven worst and common mistakes that people do in hiring professional moving company. If you are going to relocate and looking for expert packers and movers, you must avoid these mistakes.

Trilok Singh Rawat is an experienced professional of transportation industry. He has worked with many reputed Packers and Movers Visakhapatnam based agencies. Condi Rice: Stateswoman and Symbol

TAMPA -- Viewed and heard from the floor of the?Tampa Bay Times?Forum, her delivery was as clipped and formal as when she was being grilled by the 9/11 commission in 2004 over the U.S. failure to prevent the terrorist attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people. The same almost-brittle delivery once struck fear in the hearts of traumatized Americans, as?when in 2002 she warned?of Saddam Hussein's military ambitions in the lead-up to the invasion of Iraq, "there will always be some uncertainty about how quickly he can acquire nuclear weapons. But we don't what the smoking gun to be a mushroom cloud."

But on Wednesday night in Florida, the energy that greeted former George W. Bush national security adviser and secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was all 2012. Taking the podium to wildly enthusiastic applause and cries of "We love you, Condi!", Rice delivered a resoundingly well-received speech that touched professorially on an array of contemporary foreign policy issues and enough compassionate conservate causes to provoke nostalgia for the presidency of a man who?left office with a 22 percent approval rating.

Looking only slightly older than when she left the national stage, she stood before a sort of electronic scrapbooking board on the Republican National Convention stage that flashed an array of images putting her in the middle of the story of the Bush years. Rumsfeld turning toward her. Rice seated with her heeled foot extended outward, a group of male shoes in the shot. President Bush turning toward her. Rice and Colin Powell, striding side by side.

Before she spoke, the Drudge Report, which earlier this year posted quickly debunked rumors that she was on Mitt Romney's vice presidential short list, published a draft of her remarks. The Romney camp did not send out advance speech excerpts for her, perhaps to help build anticipation for her speech (you can read?the prepared for delivery version?here).

In her speech, Rice criticized President Obama more gently than many who have trod the stage this week, saying that the Arab Spring proves the "desire for freedom is indeed universal" but that the promise of the unprisings is "engulfed in uncertainty" and America's allies do not know where the country stands.

"'Where does America stand?'" Rice asked. "You see when friends or foes, alike, do not know the answer to that question -- unambiguously and clearly -- the world is likely to be a more dangerous and a chaotic place." Warning against malign powers who would seek to fill a leadership vacuum abroad, she asserted, "peace really does come through strength" and said America's might would be "safe in Mitt Romney's hands."

But it was her remarks on her own personal story and on the need for better K-12 education for minority children -- which she called "the civil rights struggle of our day" that she drew the greatest response from the audience, suggesting that she's no longer seen just as a foreign policy intellectual and high-stature former government official but as a powerfully symbolic figure. Her personal successes and race give her an unusual authority within the a party starved for black leaders to contrast with Obama and values-laden personal narratives to contrast against programs Republicans would cut.

Rice said earlier today she would not consider a position in a Romney administration. But even if she doesn't, it's clear from tonight that her place in the Romney-Ryan Republican Party is assured.

Japan demands investigation into attack on ambassador's car in China

The attack by a group of men in Beijing came as nationalist sentiment deepens in both China and Japan over ownership of islands in the South China Sea.

Beijing apologized for the embarrassing incident on Monday, in which an unidentified man ripped the Japanese flag from the ambassador?s car amid rising tensions over disputed islands in the East China Sea.

A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said the government was undertaking a ?serious investigation? and would guarantee foreign diplomats? safety. That did not stop Japanese Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba from formally demanding an investigation on Tuesday, calling the incident ?deplorable.?

Thousands of anti-Japanese protesters took to the streets of cities across China last weekend for the second straight week, burning Japanese flags and vandalizing Japanese restaurants and businesses.

The violence is the latest flare-up of a long-simmering row between Beijing and Tokyo over ownership of a handful of uninhabited rocky islands known here as the Diaoyu and in Japan as the Senkaku islands. The islands are surrounded by fishing grounds, and sovereignty would confer rights over nearby undersea oil and gas deposits.

The most recent war of words broke out between the two Asian neighbors a month ago, when Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda appeared to suggest that his government might seek to buy the islands from their private Japanese owner, an idea championed by maverick Tokyo governor Shintaro Ishihara.

That prompted a sharp response from Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei, who expressed Beijing?s ?strong displeasure? with what he called Mr. Noda?s ?highly irresponsible? remarks.

Tensions rose further when a group of Chinese activists from Hong Kong landed on one of the disputed islands on Aug.15, the 67th ?anniversary of Japan?s surrender at the end of World War II.

After they had been arrested by the Japanese coast guard and expelled from Japan, a group of right wing Japanese activists landed on another of the islands to make their own point for a couple of hours, before coast guard officials persuaded them to leave.

Nationalist and anti-Japanese sentiment is strong in China, where the authorities have long encouraged it in their citizens from an early age through history books that often inflame resentment against the former invaders.

The Chinese government faces a delicate task, however, not wanting to appear soft on Japan yet anxious to keep protests from turning into expressions of dissatisfaction with the Chinese authorities themselves, or from spilling over into violence that might seriously harm relations with Tokyo.

The Japanese authorities too appear anxious not to let the dispute get out of hand. The government yesterday refused a request from the Tokyo municipality for permission to land a delegation on the islands.

Oil stays above $95 as Hurricane Isaac goes inland

The price of oil hovered above $95 a barrel on Thursday after a powerful storm that had shut down refineries along the U.S. Gulf Coast started to ease as it moved inland.

By early afternoon in Europe, benchmark oil for October delivery was down 2 cents to $95.47 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 84 cents to finish at $95.49 a barrel on Wednesday.

In London, Brent crude rose 75 cents to $113.29 on the ICE Futures exchange.

Traders were watching for any reports of significant damage from Hurricane Isaac as it passed over oil facilities in the Gulf of Mexico. The storm's heavy winds and rain were not expected to cause extensive damage to oil production and refinery operations.

"Although a lot of the production capacity was closed down, it was a precautionary measure and we're not hearing any reports of significant damage," said Nick Trevethan, senior commodities strategist at ANZ Research in Singapore. "There have been some power outages that may interfere with the restart of some onshore facilities."

Trading volumes were low as markets awaited U.S. Federal Reserve chief Ben Bernanke's highly anticipated speech on Friday at an economic conference in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Market watchers are hoping for signs that the Fed is willing to take action to spur growth in the U.S.

They are also anticipating the release of manufacturing data out of China. Worse-than-expected numbers could put pressure on Beijing for more stimulus measures to help revive growth in the world's No. 2 economy.

Meanwhile, an unexpected rise in U.S. crude stockpiles was helping to keep a ceiling on oil prices.

"The U.S. inventory data presented (Wednesday) afternoon by the U.S. Department of Energy additionally weighed on prices," said analysts at Commerzbank in Frankfurt. "Last week, crude oil stocks rose sharply by 3.8 million barrels, putting them 7.5 percent higher than the five-year average and at their highest level for this time of year since 1990."

In other Nymex energy trading, heating oil advanced 2.2 cents to $3.1444 a gallon while wholesale gasoline rose 1.09 cents to $2.9277 a gallon. Natural gas slipped 2.4 cents to $2.661 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Ex-US guard in China pleads guilty in secrets case

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A former security guard at the construction site of a new U.S. consulate compound in Guangzhou, China pleaded guilty Thursday to trying to sell secret photos and other secret information about restricted areas inside the facility to China's Ministry of State Security.

At a hearing in federal court, Bryan Underwood admitted that the case against him as laid out by prosecutors in court papers was correct.

"Guilty," he said when the judge asked for his plea.

According to prosecutors, Underwood had lost a substantial amount of money in the stock market and hoped to make $3 million to $5 million by selling information and access to the consulate. Underwood created a schematic that listed all security upgrades to the U.S. consulate and drew a diagram of the surveillance camera locations at the facility, according to papers in the case.

Underwood wrote a letter to the ministry of state security expressing interest in initiating a business arrangement with Chinese officials and took photographs of his worksite to pass on. He was turned away by a guard who declined to accept the letter.

He later left the letter in the open in his apartment hoping that Chinese state security would find it. He believed that Chinese state security routinely searched apartments occupied by Americans.

A year ago, U.S. law enforcement agents in Hong Kong interviewed Underwood and he revealed his plans to sell information and access to China.

The charge Underwood pleaded guilty to carries a sentence of up to life in prison. Under federal sentencing guidelines, Underwood likely will be sentenced to serve between 188 and 235 months in prison. That's between 15 and 20 years.

Life Insurance Isn't Just for Dying! | Life And Leisure NJ

By Mark Charnet

Over the -past 30 years there have been many arguments about the types of life insurance policies available in the marketplace.? The media has compared Term vs. Whole Life vs. Variable Life vs. Universal Life and variations within each of these life insurance products. What has never been contested, debated or discussed, is the need for life insurance.? The need is universally accepted by everyone I have ever spoken to about the subject!? What?s interesting though is that most people would rather not discuss spending any money onlife insurance and that truly is disappointing, regrettable and may I also say flat-out wrong!

?

The #1 reason for the purchase of a policy, has traditionally been income replacement of the family breadwinner.? A close second has been to pay for a funeral and final expenses.? Other reasons include: debt coverage or a mortgage or a business partnership buy and sell arrangement to cover the expenses of college for the kids and to equalize inheritances.? Another fabulous reason to purchase a life policy is to settle the tax bill from the government, both state and federal, due to the onerous taxes imposed at death!? Some people purchased whole life policies to accumulate cash value for:emergencies, college savings, a first home purchase,a wedding or even to help with retirement income; and all of these were and are excellent reasons to have a life insurance policy.

?

Today, however, there are even more compelling reasons to take a look at how life insurance can work wonders for you!? The biggest one, in my opinion, is to create a non-qualified deferred compensation plan as a retirement plan supplement.? Yes, in addition to your IRA, 401k, savings and emergency funds a properly funded life insurance policy can work wonders for your future in a tax-free environment.? But wait, there?s still more!? Now, your life insurance policy can offer payments prior to death if you are unable to perform some of the activities of daily living like: bathing, moving from room to room, dressing or feeding yourself. If you have a cognitive impairment like senility, Alzheimer?s or dementia your life insurance policy can pay you a partial claim.?? A new life policy can pay a partial claim if you have a heart attack or a stroke or cancer and don?t die! Did you know that? ?If you are diagnosed with a terminal illness, this too will trigger a partial claim.? You know what?s also unique?? These benefits are also available on certain Term policies as well!? Imagine, for one premium you can get coverage for all of these contingencies at the same time from one policy and it will still pay a death benefit when you die!

?

Now it?s true that a traditional long-term care policy would offer substantially greater benefits than a life insurance policy with a long-term care rider, but, how many of my readers have either not considered, cancelled or have inadequate long-term care protection?? With the cost of a nursing home in our area exceeding $100,000+ annually and the average length of stay to be around three years, the latest statistics tell us that there is a 70% chance if you are over age 75, that you will enter a nursing home or the watered down definition, an assisted living facility, before you die! The risk to your portfolio and estate requires a second look at providing this much needed protection.? I teach in my workshops that a life insurance policy may be the best long-term care policy of all in that you might never have the nursing home experience, but, for sure you?re going to die!? If there was an intrusion into your net-worth to pay for long-term care, the life insurance policy would ultimately replace those funds tax-free.? If you and or your spouse never spent a dime on long-term care, the life insurance pay-off could be used for one of the reasons mentioned earlier.? Your kids can certainly use the infusion of capital for their retirement years or your grandchildren?s college expenses or to pay estate taxes at your death ?? whatever the reason, I can assure you it won?t go unused!

?

No, life insurance isn?t just for dying anymore!? It?s actually better if used for living!? With that thought in mind, may I suggest a policy review to determine if a new and improved model might be better suited to your individual needs in 2012 then when you originally made your purchase in the past.? Have no policy yet?? Regardless of your age or health, it behooves you to investigate your options. Call today for information.? As always there is no cost or fee to inquire, so come in and get the facts and more information. Both you and your family will benefit!

(AP) ? Apple's $1 billion court victory over Samsung poses a lot of questions for consumers. Will Samsung phones still be available for sale? Will they be more expensive? Will owners of existing phones need to worry?

A federal jury in San Jose, Calif., ruled late Friday that Samsung, the world's largest maker of phones, had copied features of the iPhone and the iPad. That included the "bounce-back" behavior when a user scrolls to the end of a page and the ability to zoom in on an image by spreading two fingers.

The jury awarded Apple $1.05 billion in damages. That was less than the $2.5 billion sought, but still a victory for Apple. Meanwhile, the jury rejected Samsung's patent-infringement claims against Apple. An appeal is expected.

For now, here's what the verdict means for consumers:

___

Q. Can I still buy a Samsung phone or tablet computer today?

A. Yes. The jury didn't prohibit sales of the devices. However, Apple will ask a judge to ban U.S. sales of several Samsung devices. A Sept. 20 hearing has been scheduled. If the judge agrees, that would affect many Samsung devices, but not the most recent ones, such as the Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note smartphones. Most of the two dozen devices covered by the lawsuit aren't sold in meaningful numbers in the U.S.

Q. Was Friday's verdict final?

A. No. Samsung is challenging it. First, Samsung will first ask the trial judge to toss the verdict. Then it will appeal to a court in Washington that specializes in patent appeals. Samsung has vowed to take the fight all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, if necessary.

Q. If Apple still prevails, will this drive Samsung out of the phone business?

A. That's not likely. The verdict doesn't apply outside the U.S. and doesn't apply to the latest Samsung devices either. The $1 billion in damages represents 1.5 percent of Samsung Electronics Co.'s annual revenue.

Q. Will this make Samsung phones more expensive?

A. Possibly. Samsung may have to pay Apple substantial royalties on each phone. Consumers will likely pay for that somehow, but it may not be noticeable in stores. Phone companies such as AT&T and Verizon Wireless already subsidize each smartphone by hundreds of dollars to get retail prices down to $99 or $199.

Q. What does this mean for the Samsung phone I already own?

A. This doesn't directly affect phones that have already been sold, even if they are the models that the judge decides to ban. In the long run, it could reduce enthusiasm around Android, the operating system from Google that Samsung uses in the devices in question. That might mean fewer applications for Android from outside parties. That will take years to play out, but could conceivably affect the resale value of your phone.

Q. Does this mean Samsung phones will look different in the future?

A. Possibly. The jury dinged Samsung's flagship Galaxy line for copying the overall look and feel of the iPhone and for using the stock icons with rounded corners that come with Android. Also at issue was the way Android can tell the difference between the touch of a single finger and several fingers. Samsung might delay some models to give it time to rework their look and feel.

Q. What does this mean for other Android phones, such as those from LG Electronics Inc., HTC Corp. and Google's Motorola Mobility?

A. Although the ruling applies only to Samsung, it will have an indirect effect on all makers of Android devices. Apple could go after them with arguments similar to the ones used against Samsung. But Friday's ruling is not precedential, meaning that other courts could reach completely different decisions.

Most likely, makers of Android phones will take more care to make their phones distinguishable from the iPhone.

It's also a standard tactic in patent cases to countersue. In this case, Samsung's patent claims against Apple were thrown out by the court. But Google has been buying up patents and could help other phone makers mount more effective countersuits.

Q. What does this mean for Android devices around the world?

A. The ruling applies only to the U.S., though Apple and Samsung are waging similar battles in other countries. On the same day Samsung lost in the U.S., it partially won a fight in South Korea. A Seoul court imposed a partial ban on South Korean sales of products from both companies. That verdict didn't affect the latest models either.

Q. What does this mean for Apple?

A. Analysts say it could help Apple gain market share at the expense of Android phones, if these have to avoid some attractive and easy-to-use features introduced by Apple.

Despite being a driving force in phone development since the iPhone was launched in 2007, Apple has only 19 percent of the worldwide smartphone market, according to IDC. The high price of the iPhone keeps it out of the reach of many consumers. Meanwhile, Android phones have 64 percent of the market.

Quora Is On A Quest For Users With Its New Embeddable Quotes

Quora Embeddable QuotesIt's a shame Quora doesn't get more traffic considering how fun and informative it is. So to raise awareness, today Quora launches an embeddable quote feature that lets any website host its content. The embeds?make citation easier, and trackbacks show authors where their questions and answers are ending up. I've embedded Quora's announcement of the feature in this post which will show you how it looks. comScore pegs Quora at 1.5 million monthly uniques, up 300% in the last year, but it's still far from becoming a household name. Like Twitter's push to get tweets on TV a few years ago, Quora embeddable quotes could get it the off-site eyeballs it needs to make learning more mainstream.

Louisiana Tech Mascot, Tech XX, Has Death Covered Up

In a terrible and twisted turn of events, Louisiana Tech reported on its Facebook page on Wednesday that its live bulldog mascot that had been missing since Sunday, Tech XX, died of heat stroke and was apparently covered up by an employee at the Sexton Animal Health Center after he or she left the dog outside too long in 102-degree heat.

It was reported on Monday that Tech XX had been let out to go to the bathroom but disappeared when an employee of the clinic returned to let him back in. That was apparently a lie as the school posted a note from the mascot?s caretaker, Patrick Sexton, who also runs the animal health center that read in part:

Regretfully, I learned this morning that through negligence of an employee, Tech XX was left outside too long on Sunday evening and passed away from a heat stroke. That employee unfortunately chose to handle it the wrong way and attempted to cover it up. Due to this negligence, the employee is no longer employed by Sexton Animal Health Center.

My family, my staff and I are extremely upset at this tragic turn of events as I know the entire Louisiana Tech Family is as well. Tech XX was a member of our immediate family and a daily part of our lives for the past four years. We are devastated over the circumstances of his passing and there will be a large void in our hearts for some time to come. As with any family member, we will spend considerable time grieving his passing.

If you?ve ever owned a pet of any kind, you can only imagine the pain the Sexton family and entire Louisiana Tech community is feeling right now. The fact that the death was allegedly due to such extreme negligence and followed by a cover-up just makes this even more sickening.

We can only hope the Sexton family and school finds a fitting way to honor the late and loveable mascot.

Long road ahead in U.S.-Pakistan ties after NATO deal

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Pakistan and the United States are set to resume broader talks on security cooperation, militant threats, aid and other issues in the wake of an agreement to reopen supply routes into Afghanistan, Pakistan's envoy to Washington said on Thursday.

But bridging underlying differences that strained U.S.-Pakistani ties close to the breaking point will be daunting as the allies remain at odds over how to handle the twin threats of the Taliban in Afghanistan and militants in Pakistani tribal areas.

The agreement reached this week prompting Pakistan to reopen NATO supply routes into Afghanistan, clinched when U.S. President Barack Obama's administration ceded to months of Pakistani demands to apologize for the U.S. air attack that killed 24 Pakistani soldiers last November, was a relief for both countries.

"I certainly think it opened the door to many other issues," Ambassador Sherry Rehman told Reuters in an interview.

"There's a long road ahead, but both sides can use this opportunity to build a path to durable ties," she added.

After U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton apologized in a phone call to Pakistani Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar, Pakistan permitted trucks carrying NATO supplies to cross into Afghanistan for the first time in more than seven months.

This was a boon for NATO nations that had been paying 2-1/2 times as much to bring supplies in through an alternate route.

While NATO will not pay any new fees for shipping supplies into Afghanistan, Washington will give Pakistan at least $1.2 billion owed it for costs incurred while fighting militants.

A U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said no specific commitments were made to increase military or counter-terrorism activities for Pakistan, but there was a 'good faith agreement' to continue talks on those issues.

ALL ABOUT THE APOLOGY

"A number of other things became stuck with all this," the official said.

"It was never a money haggle or a transactional deal," Rehman said, speaking during a visit to Islamabad where she helped usher in the arrangement ending the months-long deadlock.

The death of the 24 soldiers inflamed public opinion among Pakistanis already angered by U.S. drone strikes, the presence of CIA personnel in Pakistan and other issues.

"We're a very hospitable people but we don't like being taken for granted - that was the public sentiment," she said, stressing why the apology was so vital.

"You had 24 boys draped in flags ... that's not something that was going away from the public domain. At every level this percolated up and down" Pakistani society.

While the breakthrough is welcome news for both sides, a harmonious road ahead is unlikely.

Issues that have inflamed bilateral ties persist, including U.S. accusations that Pakistan harbors militants and meddles in Afghanistan, Pakistani chafing at U.S. drone strikes and fears on both sides that Pakistan's western neighbor will revert to chaos after most NATO troops leave by the end of 2014.

Pakistan has long complained that the United States has overlooked its contribution to the fight against militants - scores of al Qaeda fighters were apprehended in Pakistan with American help - and the threat Pakistanis themselves face.

Late last month, more than 100 fighters loyal to Pakistani Taliban leader Fazlullah snuck across the Afghan border and staged an ambush inside Pakistan.

Several days later, the fighters released a video of what they said were the heads of 17 ambushed soldiers, along with their identification cards.

It was a chilling reminder of the threat militants based in Afghanistan pose to Pakistan - the mirror image of the situation that fuels U.S. complaints about Pakistan, and a threat that would be sure to become more serious if Afghanistan were to slip back into civil war.

The United States repeatedly has pressed Pakistan to pursue the Taliban and its allies, especially the Haqqani network, which it blames for a series of high-profile attacks in Afghanistan.

Last month, U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said the United States was reaching the limits of its patience with Pakistan over what it deems as foot-dragging on militants.

Rehman said that most of al Qaeda has been decimated with Pakistani cooperation, and that Islamabad would go after foreign fighters linked to other militants according to "Pakistan's priorities" and time frame.

The immediate military priority was combating insurgents who target Pakistani security forces and civilians, she said.

"We are going after our own right now - foreign fighters and militants who are on our soil, who are attacking us. If there is someone beheading me I am going to go after him first."

Rehman said Pakistan stood to pay a high price if the NATO project in Afghanistan does not produce a stable country, in part because instability is likely to spill over the two countries' porous border.

"For Pakistan, the stakes in Afghan stability are very high," Rehman said.

Gaia spacecraft to be flung 1.5 million km from Earth

The European Space Agency is continuing to prepare for the launch of its Gaia spacecraft set for 2013. Gaia's mission will see it creating a 3D map of a billion stars in the Milky Way using a 1.5-gigapixel camera.

In this photo, taken at the EADS CASA test facility in Madrid, Spain, checks are being made on Gaia's 1.5-metre-wide antenna panel to ensure data will reach Earth safely. The foam spikes on the walls of the test room block radio signals to simulate space. Electronic steering will ensure the antenna is always directed towards its target while the spacecraft rotates in space as it maps the stars, asteroids, extrasolar planets and other objects.

After launch, Gaia will take up an orbit around the sun 1.5 million kilometres beyond, but in pace with, Earth's to minimise the distance the weak signal has to travel. During its initial five-year mission, Gaia will send an estimated 200 terabytes of data to radio dishes in Spain and Australia. A working antenna is obviously central to downloading this data safely.
